This list of questions is provided for individuals that are interested in starting a business or developing a new product. As with any significant business decision, you should always seek advice from professional advisors prior to moving forward.

1. How committed are you to developing the product? (Are you all-in)

2. What motivates you to make the product a success? (Money, family, etc.)

3. Have you successfully developed any additional products? (Taken them to market directly/indirectly)

4. Are you the majority shareholder in the business?

5. Is the company carrying any significant outstanding debt?

6. What is the product’s value proposition? (Primary differentiator/s. What problem/s does it solve)

7. Do you have an elevator pitch? (30-secords or less)

6. Have you prepared a formal business plan for the product?

8. Do you have any product IP? (Pending/issued patents)

9. If IP protection is pending or issued, what type? (Design, utility, both)

10. Are there any significant product liability concerns?

11. Are you working with a business attorney?

12. Are you working with a business accountant?

13. Have you researched liability insurance (Corporate, product, etc.)

14. Have you secured domain name options?

15. Have you researched/filed for trademark protection?

16. Do you know how much capital will be required to launch your product/the business?

17. Do you have capital on hand to launch the product/business?

18. Can the company secure the necessary credit required for manufacturing, operations, etc.?

19. Do you have investors interested in capitalizing the business?

20. Is your corporate structure in place? (Operating Agreement, bylaws, subscription agreement, etc.)

21. Do you have any significant business contacts in place? (sales and marketing, etc.)

22. Do you want to run the company’s day-to-day business operations? (What’s your future role in the business)

23. Are you familiar with the day-to-day operations required to launch and grow a business?  (Product development/sourcing, manufacturing, operations, IT, marketing, public relations, human resources, etc.)

24. Do you want to manage distribution for your product, or will you outsource it? (Warehousing, pick-pack-and-ship, etc.)

25. Have you aligned yourself with a manufacturer?

26. Where do you want to manufacture your product? (US, Central America, Asia, etc.)

27. What are your financial goals for the product? (How big do you think it can be)

28. Have you identified your primary competitors?

29. What is the average price point for your competitor’s products?

30. Where do you want to price your product? (Low, medium, high)

31. Have you created any working prototypes for your product?

32. Have you developed tooling to manufacture your product?

33. Have you identified a packaging source? (retail packaging, POS displays, etc.)

34. Have you selected/identified a digital media developer (Website, social media, SEO, etc.)

35. Are you familiar with product licensing and how it typically works?

36. Are you willing to license your technology to an existing brand in your product space?

37. Have you identified your primary concerns with taking your product to market?
